THE PENNSYLVANIA ARTS EXPERIENCE
LOWER SUSQUEHANNA RIVER VALLEY ARTIST TRAIL

The lower Susquehanna River Valley is the first of three regions to be featured as part of the Pennsylvania Arts Experience (this experience will expand next year to include the Brandywine and Delaware River Valley regions). For centuries, artists and artisans have been attracted by the area's sublime landscape-the broad Susquehanna, dramatic river bluffs, gentle hills, and fertile farmland-and also by the distinctive architecture of its historic cities and small towns. From the rich tradition of Amish quilts to the pioneering modernist paintings of Lancaster native Charles Demuth, the region boasts a diverse artistic heritage.

Today, nationally and internationally known artists continue the region's artistic tradition, tucked away in unique studios located in renovated barns or adaptively reused spaces. With an exclusive PA Arts Experience backstage pass, watch as Phyllis Koster works on her loom using handspun wool to create intricate weavings inspired by views of the Susquehanna. Observe master landscape painter Mark Workman transforming layers of acrylic wash into the afterglow of a Lancaster County sunset. Witness the bronze casting process and the remarkable sculpture of George Mummert at the Keystone Art and Culture Center. Visit the studio of Sue Reno, who was recently featured on HGTV and whose nature-inspired quilts bring a contemporary edge to a traditional medium. When not visiting studios, you might find yourself exploring the scenic countryside, discovering the region's many fine museums, galleries, and antique shops, sipping a glass of locally produced wine, or dining on the fresh produce and cuisine of rural Pennsylvania. Overnight visitors can retire to a quaint B&B or to the Lancaster Arts Hotel, a sophisticated hostelry housed in a renovated tobacco warehouse.
