Backyards, the spaces in-between dwellings, and the boundaries people create around their homes
fascinate me. Painting my immediate surroundings over and over from different vantage points,
I form a collected experience of a particular spot.
My paintings are primarily done outside, on-site, in surroundings I know. Buildings and other man made structures in the landscape are repeated subjects. I find subject matter in work-yards, vacant lots, and personal artifacts that collect around homes. Backyards, the spaces in-between dwellings, and the boundaries people create around their homes fascinate me. Painting my immediate surroundings over and over from different vantage points, I form a collected experience of a particular spot. Recently I’ve started painting my surroundings as they are reflected in windows. I love the experience and spontaneity of working outside - it requires working quickly and spontaneously. I aim for a painterly integrity that avoids "fussy" description, and which places color first. Working with oils on panel allows for a simplification of reality using painterly language, fluid paint, and integrated color.
