Klaus Gutzka was born in Breslau, Germany and his father was an artist known throughout Europe. As a young man, Grutzka attended art school in Kiel, Germany, later relocating to the United States in 1961. He worked as an artist and illustrator for many major U.S. industrial firms including U. S. Steel and the Amerada Hess Corporation. He also taught art at the prestigious Ducret School in New Jersey and the Hill School in Pennsylvania.

A passion for the forms and structures of America’s industry in his paintings and photographs, Grutzka has compiled what may be the most comprehensive essay of America’s great industrial past. Though reflective of the precisionist style, the work is often pluralistic, a synthesis of abstract expressionism and essential form with a style unique in its allegory. His photographs relay the vibrancy of a time when strength and integrity were the backbone of America.
