Marion G. Mackey
Marion G. Mackey

Marion G. Mackey began working with textiles in 1978, when she joined with many others in the quilting resurgence. After studying with many well-known textile artists in New Jersey, where she lived at the time, and with others nationwide, she began to develop a style of her own.

After several years, the family moved to West Chester, PA. As Marion’s textile career continued, many of her works were juried into national shows including American Quilt Society in Paducah, KY, and the International Quilt Show in Houston, TX, as well as European Quilt Festivals, in Spain, and in Holland. Her art quilts have appeared in many magazines and display many techniques, including heavy quilting with the use of many different types of threads.

This has evolved into the making of small landscapes, based on several photos she has taken, a home sewing machine and the liberal use of many colors of thread. This technique is self-taught and is not done by any of her contemporaries. As many as thirty or forty different colors of thread might be used in one “thread painting”. These small, intimate works are truly one of a kind, as each is executed individually. Many hours of work and thousands of stitches are required in these exacting works before the picture is finished.

These threadworks have been in the Daylesford Abbey Art show for the last five years, in Spirit of the Artist Gallery in Philadelphia for several years, and in the Visual Expansion Gallery in West Chester, PA. Marion is a member of the American Quilt Society, Studio Art Quilt Association and Pennsylvania Arts Experience.
